Marion Shutt
Marion D. Abel Shutt, 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in rural Lawrence, Kansas, on Friday, May 8, 2026. Cindy will be forever grateful that Marion's niece JoAnn Mott, and her sister-in-law Mary Abel were by her side at the time of passing. She was born July 28, 1933, in Gardner, Kansas, the daughter of Otto Abel and Sarah Neis Abel. She was the youngest of seven children.
Marion attended the one-room Evening Star School through the eighth grade and graduated from Eudora High School in 1950. After graduation, she worked for two years to save money to attend St. Luke's School of Nursing, where she graduated in 1955.
One week after graduation, Marion married the love of her life, Earl Felix Shutt, on February 12,1955, at Salem EUB Chapel in Eudora, Kansas. She worked as a nurse at Lawrence Memorial Hospital before joining Gynecology and Obstetrics, P.A. in February 1961 where she remained with the same medical practice until her retirement.
Marion enjoyed an active and full life. In high school, she loved running track and she played softball for the City of Eudora team. She and Felix first met at the Lawrence Roller Rink and shared a lifelong love of outdoor activities. Together they enjoyed water skiing and even learned to snow ski at age 55 (Felix was 60) as well as traveling everywhere including Alaska, Maine, Hawaii,.Canada, the Caribbean, several cruises and many trips to Colorado. They also owned a fifth wheel for many years until she decided it wasn't a vacation for her and that she preferred motels or cruises.
She was a devoted member of Eudora United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, set up many blood drives, served in numerous church offices, and was very active in The United Methodist Women's group . Marion and Felix faithfully helped prepare and serve the church's Easter Sunrise Breakfast for many years.
Marion was also a longtime member of the Mackey Merry Makers Club for more than 60 years. She was an accomplished seamstress who lovingly made clothing for her daughters, often creating matching outfits for their dolls. In the 1970s, she learned to quilt and spent many Thursdays quilting with fellow nurses, a pediatrician, and close friends until 2016. One of her greatest joys was making a quilt for each of her grandchildren.
Marion is survived by her daughters, Linda (Randy) Coleman of Eudora and Cindy Shutt-Brown of Lawrence; daughter-in-law Cherryl Shutt, her grandchildren, Holly Trunk, Tommy (Jody) Shutt, Mark (Heather) Shutt, Sarah Shutt, Lorena (Spencer) Morse, and Kyle (Amanda) Shutt; 10 great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Mary Abel.
