Michael Heavin

Michael Gene Heavin, 67, passed peacefully at home on June 8, 2026 after a courageous battle with kidney cancer.

Born on May 7, 1959, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Mike lived a life devoted to faith, family, learning, and friendship. Most recently, he made his home in Cedar Lake, Indiana.

When Mike was ten years old, his family moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where he grew up and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1977. He later attended the University of Kansas, earning a degree in computer science with a concentration in journalism. He was a Jayhawk for life.

Mike was a seeker of truth from an early age and demonstrated sincerity and dedication throughout his life. As an example, he would often walk 6 miles to attend church services.

While attending KU, he met Teresa Parker in a computer programming class, who introduced him to the Church of Christ. He had a car and would give her rides home from class (she rode the bus). He would say I'm going to marry you and I'll pray for you. She would reply not if you're not a member of the church and God only hears the prayers of a righteous man. He then asked if there was someone he could study with and in the summer of 1982, Mike was baptized by Chester King into the Church of Christ in Kansas City, Kansas. Later that same year, on August 14, 1982, Mike and Teresa were united in marriage in Benkelman, Nebraska. Together they built a loving Christian home and shared 43 years of faithful service to the Lord and His church. To this union were born three children: Heather Nicole in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee; Sarah Elizabeth in Dallas, Texas; and Jonathan Roger in Portland, Oregon.

Mike began his professional career at Intergraph in Huntsville, Alabama. His background in journalism, having worked on the high school and college newspapers, and classes in college along with his Computer Science degree led to his career in technical writing. His work career led the family through seven different states and many companies over the years.

No matter where life took them, Mike and Teresa formed treasured friendships through Church of Christ congregations across the United States-friendships they deeply valued and cherished.

Mike was an avid reader and lifelong learner. He loved golf, a game he learned as a child from his father. In later years, his greatest hobby became disc golf. He loved playing, watching, discussing the sport, and collecting discs. One of his favorite experiences was taking a disc golf trip through the eastern United States and Canada with his son Jonathan and son-in-law Bill.

Above all else, Mike loved God, his family, and the church. He faithfully served as a leader and teacher in the Church of Christ for 43 years. His steady faith, thoughtful wisdom, and servant's heart touched many lives. Those who knew him will remember his devotion to Scripture, his desire for truth, his quiet humor, and his enduring love for others.

Mike is survived by his wife, Teresa, children Heather and Bill Reynolds of Summertown, Tennessee, Sarah and Joshua Frisbee of Cedar Lake, Indiana, and Jonathan Heavin of Oswego, Illinois. Grandchildren, Landon and Izzy Reynolds, Kristopher Alan, Nivaeh Rae, Lilah Fae, and Emma Kae Frisbee, Great Grandchildren, Evangeline Nicole and Wrenley Mae Reynolds. He is also survived by his parents, Jon and Linda Heavin; his biological mother, Janet and husband Jerry Christoff; his brother Jeff of Phoenix, Arizona; and his sister Kim Heavin Wilson and husband Andy, and nephew, Alex, of Geneva, Illinois.

Mike's life was anchored in the promise of Christ, and his family rejoices in the hope of the resurrection and eternal life through Jesus. Though he will be deeply missed, his faithful example and steadfast love will continue to bless all who knew him.
