James Gambrill
James Michael Gambrill, fondly known as ‘Jim’ to his family and friends, peacefully departed this world on July 5, 2026, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, at the age of 85. Born on April 13, 1941, in the heart of Lawrence, Kansas, Jim was a beacon of kindness and warmth whose presence will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Jim was the beloved son of the late Ernest Grover Gambrill and Monica Margaret Coughlin (Gambrill) Morrison. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Jack and Billy Gambrill.
Growing up, Jim learned the values of family, hard work, and integrity-principles that would guide him throughout his life.
A man of many talents and business ventures, Jim was best known for his role as the owner of B & J Thriftway Grocery Store in Tonganoxie. Through his business, he not only provided employment opportunities, but also became a pillar of the community, known for his fairness, generosity and community spirit. His dedication to his work was matched only by his passion for wood working, cars, antiques and attending auctions, hobbies that brought him immense joy and countless friendships.
Jim had a unique gift for making others feel welcome and valued. He was always quick with a joke and his warm smile could light up a room. Whether through a kind word, a helping hand, or a heartfelt laugh, Jim touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark on the hearts of those around him.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved partner, Terri A. Chop.
He is also survived by his loving children: Melissa Katz, Eric Gambrill, and Mark Gambrill with his wife Tanya. His legacy lives on in his grandchildren, Devon Katz, Bryce Katz, Ty Gambrill, and Ian Gambrill, who will continue to carry forward his spirit of kindness and community.
