Joanna Ward

A Celebration of Life Service for Joanna Belle Ward, 97, Lawrence, KS is set for 11:00 am, July 22, 2026 at Southside Church of Christ in Lawrence, KS. Joanna passed away July 2, 2026, at LMH in Lawrence, KS.

Joanna was born on August 22, 1928, in Pawhuska, OK, the daughter of Earl A. and Fern (Allen) Kuntz.

She married Darrell Lee Ward on August 30, 1952, in Enid, OK, and he preceded her in death on July 22, 2016.

Jo and Darrell settled in Lawrence, KS in 1959 and were active members of Southside Church of Christ. She taught 1st grade for many years before retiring. After retirement, Jo and Darrell traveled in their RV, always with at least one dog in tow. Jo loved painting and drawing and many friends and family have their own piece of her artwork. She took up writing poetry in the last year of her life and was a favorite in her retirement community group. She loved being Granny Jo to her many grandchildren and great-children.

Survivors include her daughter, Suzanne Ward Bowman, son, Daniel (Dena) Ward, six grandchildren, April Bowman Abbott, Travis Bowman, Candace Ward Harris, Jacob Ward, Ryan Pinegar, Karissa Hunter and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Joanna was also preceded in death by her parents, and son David Lee Ward.

As an artist, Jo loved bright colors. The family requests those attending her service wear something colorful.

Memorial contributions may be made in Joanna's name to The Lawrence Humane Society.
