Connie Broers
Connie Jean Broers, 74, of Baldwin City, KS died on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at home in Baldwin City, Kansas surrounded by her loving family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and remembered as a kind and joyful soul who loved animals and all growing things, a voracious reader with a sharp intellect and wicked sense of humour, and a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, daughter and friend.
She was born October 28, 1951 in Vallejo, California the daughter of Charles Andrew Estes Sr. and Jimmie Ellen (Brooks) Estes. A quick and gifted learner, Connie graduated near the top of her class from Raytown South High School in Raytown, Missouri with the class of 1969. She would go on to obtain a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology from the University of Missouri in 1974.
On May 16, 1976 Connie Jean was united in marriage to Lonnie Joe Broers at Tauy Baptist Church outside of Ottawa, KS. They made their home in Raytown, MO before moving to Baldwin City, KS in 1989. The couple celebrated over 49 years of loving marriage.
Connie began her career as medical technologist, working at Blue Ridge Medical Laboratory in Raytown, MO, the VA hospital in Kansas City, MO, and Overland Park Medical Center (Humana) in Overland Park, KS. She concluded her career as the Laboratory Director at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, KS, working there for 22 years and postponing her retirement until 2022 in order to guide her department through the Covid-19 pandemic. She loved her job, and excelled in mentoring peers and helping patients. Universally respected in her field, Connie was a member and president of the Kansas City chapter of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science.
She had a strong faith and was a devout member of the Tauy Baptist Church.
Most of all, Connie deeply loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. Some of the happiest times in her life were the summers she spent with her family in Montana, working with her husband Lonnie for the Forest Service in West Yellowstone.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Andrew Estes Sr.; her father-in-law, Wendell Broers; and one sister-in-law, Linda Broers.
Connie is survived by her loving husband, Lonnie Joe Broers of Baldwin City, Kansas; one son, Hans Broers and fiance Michaelle Rodriguez of Miami, Florida; one daughter, Laini Broers and husband Joey Hook of Austin, Texas; her mother, Jimmie Ellen Estes of Bonita Spring, Florida; one brother, Andy Estes and wife Becky Estes of Lee's Summit, Missouri; one sister, Meg Sadi and husband Mike Sadi of Bonita Springs, Florida; her mother-in-law, Martha Evelyn Broers of Baldwin City, Kansas; her brother-in-law Terry Broers and wife Rose Broers of Wellsville, KS; two grandchildren, Nova Stella Hook and Elle Rodriguez; two aunts and one uncle; four nephews; four nieces and numerous cousins, great nieces and great nephews.
At Connie's request, there will be no public service. Inurnment will occur at Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin City, KS. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to the Lawrence Humane Society, American Cancer Society and Tauy Baptist Church and sent in c/o Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, P.O.
