CJ Baker

CJ Baker, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, passed away on August 19, 2025, in Lawrence, KS at the age of 91. CJ was born on August 2, 1934, in Herington, KS, the son of Charles and Estelle Baker.
CJ started working for the Rock Island Railroad in Herington, KS when he was 17 years old. Over the next 45 years, the railroad took him to Liberal, KS and Hutchinson, KS all while living in Salina, KS.
In 1959, CJ married his beloved Pat (Patty) Riggin from Burdick, KS. On August 30th, they would have celebrated 66 years of marriage. After living in Salina since 1978, Pat and CJ decided to move to Lawrence, KS when they both retired, to be closer to family
CJ loved his family, friends and life. He almost always had an ornery grin and if he was moving, he was usually singing or humming a tune. CJ loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and snow skiing. He and Pat were very active in their church. Also, for many years, they enjoyed line and square dancing.
CJ was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Barbara Muller and Charlene Thompson and brother, Don.
CJ is survived by his wife Pat, daughter Kim (Tom) Liebl, son's Doug (Pam) Baker and Marc (Lynne) Baker. Grandpa CJ will be lovingly remembered by 8 grandchildren- Brecken (Michael Valverde) Liebl, Parker (Tiane DeVore) Liebl, McKenzie Liebl, Chad Baker, Tailor (Nick) Crittenden, Levi (Alex) Baker, Riggin Baker, Cole Baker as well as great-grandchildren – Rigby Armstrong, Ryker and Hadleigh Crittenden, Lynnlee and Casen Baker, Jack and Avery Baker, and Lincoln Liebl.
CJ's family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Star Living for their loving care and compassion during his final days.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
