Robert Altenbernd

Robert ‘Bob’ Altenbernd, age 86, passed away peacefully in Eudora, KS on August 13, 2025 surrounded by family and friends. Born on June 11, 1939 to the late Herbert and Bessie (Bullock) Altenbernd in Lawrence, KS, Bob grew up on a farm in the Kaw Valley bottoms, with deep roots in the local area. After graduating from Lawrence High School, Bob spent much of his working life as a farmer, farming land between Lawrence and Eudora. He later worked as a security guard at Farmland and at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He will be remembered as a consummate storyteller, a thoughtful listener, and someone with a deep knowledge of local history.

Bob was also a loyal son, brother, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his ex-wife Rebecca and their children Mark (Nancy) Altenbernd, Rob (Nancy) Altenbernd, Sherry (Derek) LaMont, and Amy (Craig) Shane; his siblings, Sandra (Richard) Vigna, Kerry (and the late Jan) Altenbernd, and Penny (and the late Kelly) Mahon; 6 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. His legacy is carried forward not only through his family but also in the memories of the many friends who shared in his life.

The community is welcome to the graveside service and scattering of ashes to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 6 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Pleasant Grove: 790 E 1217 Rd, Lawrence, KS 66047.
