Ruth Stoebener

Ruth Darlene (Hornberger) Stoebener, 96, of Baldwin City, KS died Monday, December 9, 2024 in Lawrence, Kansas.

She was born January 25, 1928 near Worden, KS the daughter of Albert Louis and Pearl Mildred (Heffner) Hornberger. She grew up on the family farm and joined the Worden Evangelical United Brethren Church as a teen-ager. She attended Range Line Grade School and graduated from Baldwin High School with the class of 1945. For the next seven years she was employed at the Baldwin State Bank until her marriage to Walter John Stoebener on June 18, 1952 after which time she was a homemaker and assisted her husband with his farming and cattle operation.

Ruth gave piano lessons to a number of young people in the community and enjoyed playing the piano for many years for Sunday school and Church Services at St. John's United Church of Christ where she was an active member after marriage. She was in charge of memorials for the church and was also the church historian and spent many hours through the years compiling scrapbooks containing church information.

Ruth also kept up to date many scrapbooks containing family information, pictures and clippings and was the one the family came to when they wanted detailed information. Ruth was an active member of the Women's Fellowship of the church and also enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting and reading. She also wrote the Central Items and later the Worden Items for the Baldwin Ledger newspaper for many years.

Ruth enjoyed cooking and baking and especially at Christmas time, she always baked, frosted and decorated special cookies and made homemade candy which she gave to family and friends. Her cookies will be missed.

Ruth was preceded in death by her mother, Pearl Hornberger on August 6, 1978, her father, Albert Hornberger on April 13, 1982 and her husband, Walter Stoebener on February 4, 2000.

Survivors include, five nephews, Robert Stoebener, Richard Johanning, Allan Schwarz, Marlin Johanning and Paul Johanning; and four nieces, Jeanette Trybom, Barbara Johnson, Paula Bowlin and Rose Marie Robertson.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, December 13, 2024 at St. John's United Church of Christ, 396 E. 900th Rd., Baldwin City, KS 66006. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery. The family will receive friends 10 a.m. Friday before the service hour at the church.
