David Neely

David Larry Neely, 76, Lawrence, Kansas, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2024. He was born September 29, 1948 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Dale and Elizabeth (Holcomb) Neely. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister Patricia Crabtree. Survivors include his brother, Roger Neely; nephew, John Crabtree (Michelle); niece, Amy Brennan (Tom); and extended family and friends.

David was a 1965 graduate of Central High School in St. Joseph, MO where he was a competitive swimmer and an accomplished musician. His musical talent led him to many adventures along his life's path. He attended the Midwestern Music and Art Camp in Lawrence as a high school student. This experience guided him to the University of Kansas where he earned a music degree. During his later college years, David was a founding member of the Gaslight Gang, a popular Dixieland band that gained a wide following including national television exposure. After college he also continued to play in additional local music ensembles including the Lawrence City Band and the Jazzhouse Big Band.

David was a devout Kansas Jayhawk fan and followed all their sports teams but especially enjoyed cheering for the men's basketball team. David was a driver for the Lawrence Bus Company for many years and was a popular presence on the KU campus. David was a college student at heart and his job with the bus company allowed him to enjoy college life without the rigors of study – a perfect scenario.

In addition to his love for music and KU, David spent a lot of time enjoying the outdoors. He enjoyed taking long walks around town and would take up to 3 walks a day if the weather was nice. His sense of humor and charm will be missed by many.

A Celebration of life to be held at a later date. Please watch for an announcement on the Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory website. Online guest book and obituary at www.meierhoffer.com.
