Doris Hughes

Lawrence – Doris June Hughes, 91, passed away on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at Pioneer Ridge Assisted Living in Lawrence, Kansas. She was born on September 26, 1932, in Lawrence, Kansas, the daughter of Otis and Mabel (LaDuke) Wiggins.

Doris had been a lifelong resident of Lawrence. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1950.

Doris had worked as a Patients Accounts Manager for Lawrence Memorial Hospital for 17 years. She became the Personnel Office Supervisor for the University of Kansas for 14 years until she retired in 1994. She was a member of the Been There-Done That Group of Lawrence High School Alumni, the Cousin's Group, and participated in water aerobics for over 20 years. She was a fan of Kansas Basketball, K-State Football and the Kansas City Chiefs. Most important were her passions for God, family, and friends. Going to church and attending bible studies, serving the Lord, sharing her faith, and being the best prayer warrior. Always thinking of others with cards and calls and being the greatest loving Gram ever.

Doris was married to Billy Lee Roberts in 1949 and to this union three daughters were born, Kathryn, Sandra and Amy. They later divorced. She married Gerald Hughes in 1972, they later divorced.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Mabel; her five brothers and spouses, Ray and Betty Wiggins, Elwood and Dorothy Wiggins, Ivan and Lois Wiggins, Jim and Barbara Wiggins, and Carl Wiggins; her sister and spouse, Patty and Buddy French; five nieces and one nephew.

Doris is survived by her three daughters, Kathryn and Roger Kugler of Lyndon, Sandra Garber and Amy Robbins, both of Lawrence; her nine grandchildren and spouses, Ursula and Dave Nichols, Heidi and David Gillette, Wendy and Marty Feltner, Cody and Yvette Nehrbass, Gretchen Garber and Tim Nelson, Adam Garber, Jake and Nicole Garber, Jessika Robbins and Jeremy and Maria Robbins; twenty great-grandchildren, Taylor Gray, Jackson and Jerrod Nichols; Sydney, Nyah and Dylan Coleman; Cleo and Elijah Feltner; Caylee Nehrbass; Tristan, Kylie, Keenan, Owen, Drew, and Will Garber; Bridget and Henry Schoepflin; Dylan and Dayton Tucker, Houston Robbins; and one great-great-grandson, Ashton; sixteen nieces and seven nephews.

Funeral services for Doris will be at 11:00am on Wednesday, October 11 at the River City Church in Lawrence. The family will receive friends from 10:00am until service time at the church. Burial will be in Lawrence Memorial Park Cemetery.
