John Towner

John Eugene Towner of Lawrence passed away Saturday May 7th at Lawrence Memorial Hospital at the age of 94. John was born in Ness City, Ks. He was proceeded in death by wive's Jean Hedrick, Shawnee, Kansas and Betty Ann Kelly, Lawrence and brother Vernon Towner of Jefferson City, Mo. He is survived by daughter Tandy Reichmeier (Mike) of Lenexa, son Randy Towner (LeAnn) of Lawrence and stepson Michael Kelly of Lawrence and sister Dorothy Kirkpatrick of Sedalia, Mo. 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. John graduated from the University of Kansas with a master's degree in music education and performance. He had a passion for Kansas sports and rarely missed a game. He played in the Kansas Alumni Band until age 92. After retiring from a long career as an elementary instrumental music teacher in the Shawnee Mission School district, where he introduced his passion of music to thousands of children, he moved to Lawrence and conducted the New Horizon Band for 17 years. John was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. John sang in the church choir until his passing. He was an avid golfer and shot his age numerous times while carding 9 holes in one. He collected classic cars and loved talking cars and showing them off. He enjoyed dancing and exercise classes. John had a quirky sense of humor but was always kind and generous. He always had time for a conversation with anyone and a hug. He leaves a grieving but proud and loving family, full of John stories that will last forever. His spirit will continue in all of us.

Visitation will be 10:00 Thursday May 12th at First Methodist Church Lawrence at 946 Vermont St, Lawrence Ks. Funeral will follow at 11:00. Burial will be at Shawnee Memorial Garden 23215 St, Shawnee, Ks. following funeral.
