John Garland

John Sanford Garland died at his home in Litchfield, NH on December 31, 2018. He was born November 3, 1934, in ElDorado, Kansas to John W. Garland and Marianne B. Garland. His family resided briefly in Arkansas City and Wichita, then settled in Wellington, Kansas, where he went all through school, graduating from Wellington High School in 1952. He attended Kansas University and received a bachelor’s degree in Education, majoring in German in 1956, then a master’s degree in Education, majoring in German in 1961. He enlisted in the U. S. Army, and spent much of his enlistment in Germany with the Army Security Agency 1957 – 1960. He taught German in high schools in Lyons, Kansas; Shawnee Mission, Kansas; Belleville, Illinois; and Hutchinson, Kansas. He taught English in Feldkirch/Gisingen, Austria, 1972-1973; returned to college at Wichita State University and earned an MBA.

He also studied at the University of Tuebingen, Germany; the University of Vienna, Austria; the University of Colorado, Boulder; and the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls.

He earned a doctorate in international business at Indiana University in 1980, and finished his career teaching in the School of Business at Kansas University, and was awarded professor emeritus status at his retirement. He was a published author. After retirement, he moved from Lawrence, Kansas to Pueblo, Colorado to be near family, and in 2012 moved with his sister and brother-in-law to New Hampshire, to be near their daughter and husband, veterinarians Dr. Sarah Garland and Dr. Jim Herrmann.

John is survived by his sister, Susanne Evans, of Loveland, CO, sister-in-law Margaret Garland of Honolulu, HI, and nieces and nephews Jane Foulks of Colorado, Sarah Garland and husband Jim Herrmann of New Hampshire, John Foulks and wife Amy Campbell Foulks of Nevada, Donna Seaman and husband John Seaman of California, Clark Evans and wife Christine Evans of Colorado, and Jim Crilly and wife Cecilia Johnston Crilly of California.

He was preceded in death by his identical twin brother Jepson Garland, his sister Sally Foulks, brother-in-law James Foulks and brother-in-law Donald Evans. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 1419 Western Ave., in Wellington, KS, followed by inurnment of cremains in Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
