Dr. Harold Warner (Hal) LeMert, 83 of Lawrence, Kansas died— in his home, surrounded by his loving family. A memorial service will be held Wednesday November 18 at 2:00PM at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence, Kansas.
He was born in Starkville, Mississippi on December 4, 1932, son of Harold W. and Bessie Lee (Nichols) LeMert. He graduated from the University of Missouri and Louisville Theological Seminary. He received his Doctorate from Eden Theological Seminary with a focus on leadership through servanthood defined by the term “Diakonia”.
An ordained Presbyterian Minister, Hal dedicated his life to active public service and advancement of civility. His many accomplishments include programs to promote equity, inclusiveness and justice. Hal served numerous congregations from 1961-1998. He was honored to retire from and be named Pastor Emeritus of Southminster Presbyterian Church. Along the way he received numerous honors and awards for his service.
Hal was an avid railroad, automobile, and civil aviation enthusiast, something he shared with his father, son, and grandchildren. Comedy was the medium he most used in relating to others finding humor is just about every situation.
Hal was caring, thoughtful, and, when necessary, provocative in his service to the church and it’s people. He served and connected well with all people from the smallest children to the elderly. Through the years many appreciated how he challenged them to think beyond the walls of their church and faith.
Dr. LeMert is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol Ann (Ballard) LeMert, his four children; Elizabeth LeMert Smith & Myles Smith of Rolla, Missouri; Paul William LeMert & Kris LeMert of Santa Barbara, California; Jennifer LeMert & Dan Beightol, Santa Barbara, California; and, Amy LeMert-Nuzum & Gary Nuzum of Lawrence. Hal enjoyed and enriched the lives of 12 grandchildren: Evelyn Bax, Sarah Bax, Joe Bax, Marshall LeMert, Meredith LeMert, Drew Jones, Ian Jones, Caroline Beightol, Will Beightol, Kate LeMert Nuzum, Gabe LeMert Nuzum, and Dean LeMert Nuzum. One great grandchild Analea Mueller.
