Herbert Claine Nunemaker

Funeral services for Herbert Claine Nunemaker, 94, Topeka, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church in Topeka. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.
Mr. Nunemaker died Monday, July 19, 2010, at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka.
He was born Feb. 27, 1916, in Lawrence, the son of Herbert C. Sr. and Mae Green Nunemaker. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School.
Mr. Nunemaker attended Kansas University. He served in the U.S. Army as first sergeant of Company C of the 328th Engineers in the European Theater during World War II.
Mr. Nunemaker was a civil engineer working for the Kansas Department of Transportation. He helped build the Kansas Turnpike and later worked for Cook Flatt & Strobel Consulting Engineers. He farmed and taught in the Rural School Adeline District No. 65 and Blue Mound District No. 29 in Douglas County.
Mr. Nunemaker was a member of First Lutheran Church of Topeka, American Legion Capital Post No. 1, and Retired Teachers No. 501. He was a charter member of the FFA in Lawrence, and a member of the Retired Kansas Highway Employees. He was a member of the Jayhawk Area Boy Scout Council, District Commissioner, and was awarded the Silver Beaver and Lutheran Lamb Award for Scouting.
He married Helen Louise Overbaugh on Sept. 22, 1946, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Charles and wife Janet, Plano, Texas, and Dr. Merle and wife Vicki, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene; two sisters, Marguerite Pettengill and Dorothy Norris; and a granddaughter, Lesley.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
