Elvin E. Davison
A memorial service for Elvin E. Davison, 83, Lawrence, will be at a later date. Cremation will follow.
Mr. Davison died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at his home.
He was born Jan. 18, 1927, in Lawrence, the son of Leslie and Beatrice Mills Davison. He attended Lawrence public schools and was a lifelong resident of Lawrence.
He joined the Marine Corps in January 1944 and served with the Fourth Marine Division in the Pacific Theater of War during World War II. He was in the first wave of Marines to land at Iwo Jima. He observed the raising of the flag and was severely wounded the following day. He retired from Farmland Industries in 1989 after 35 years.
Mr. Davison was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 852, Lawrence, and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a Golden Eagle member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 309 and a member of the American Legion 14, both of Lawrence.
He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-children, and spending his summers in the mountains of Colorado.
He married Elaine L. Marsell on April 30, 1947. They shared nearly 63 years of marriage. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Grant, Lawrence, and Jennifer Hathaway and husband Darrell, Overbrook; a son, Tom Davison, Lakewood, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Virginia Sims, Lori Stanley, Tracy Bruce, T.J. Davison, Dee Hathaway, Miranda Cummings, Chayton Hathaway; a stepgranddaughter, Andrea Halsted; and seven great-grandchildren, Cody Bruce, Dara Mole Baskins, Melissa and Rebecca Mole, Brett and Brooklyn Hadl, and Layla Cummings.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Vernon, Bill and Duane; a sister, Betty; and a son-in-law, Dr. David J.W. Grant.
The family will meet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St.
