Dorothy L. Van Wyk
A memorial service for Dorothy L. Van Wyk, 97, Orange City, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Jonathan Opgenorth will officiate. Burial will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.
Mrs. Van Wyk died Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.
She was born Dec. 14, 1911, in Burslem, England, the daughter of the Rev. Ernest and Francis Jennings Parkes. As a young child, she moved with her family to South Dakota.
After graduating from college, she was a school teacher for 15 years.
She was a resident of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City for the past 10 years. She was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church and a Sunday school teacher.
She married Lawrence Van Wyk on June 17, 1942, in Langford, S.D. He died Oct. 21, 1992.
She was also preceded in death by a grandson.
Survivors include four daughters, Marilyn Draayer, West Okoboji; Carol Van Wyk, Lawrence, Kan.; Pat De Vries, Sioux Center; and Judy Meylink, Lake Mills, Wis.; a sister, Marjorie Davis, of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A prayer service will take place at 1 p.m. today at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City before the memorial service.
