Robert Hugh Hein

Funeral services for Robert Hugh Hein, 78, Topeka, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road, Topeka. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. at the Kansas Municipal Cemetery in Marion.
Mr. Hein, formerly of Derby, Wichita and Marion, died Saturday, May 30, 2009, in Topeka.
He was born in Hillsboro, the daughter of Jake and Anna Hein.
Mr. Hein attended Kansas University in 1949 as a Battenfeld Scholar, track athlete and Glee Club member. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division as a regimental training officer and with the Army Reserves as a commander in support of the Korean conflict. Following his military service, Mr. Hein joined the Boeing Company in Wichita. He retired in 1995 as a senior business manager after 42 years.
Mr. Hein was active in the community and with charities including United Way and Junior Achievement. He was also president of the Boeing Credit Union. He enjoyed singing with the Wichita chapter of the barbershop quartet organization S.P.E.B. S.Q.S.A. He moved in 1970 to Derby, where he was a member of the school board. After retirement, he and his wife moved to Topeka and enjoyed boating, reading, cooking, and playing bridge and cribbage.
Survivors include his wife, Sue, a daughter, Melinda Fish and husband Gary, Lawrence; a son, Scot and wife Julia, Vancouver, Canada; two granddaughters, Carly and Mary; and a grandson, Briggs.
Friends may call at 3 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
