John N. King
A celebration of life for John N. King, 83, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Lawrence. Burial will follow at Mount Moriah Cemetery, Kansas City, Mo.
Mr. King died Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.
He was born June 23, 1926, in North Kansas City, Mo., the son of Vern and Laura Griffin King. He graduated from North Kansas City High School in 1943.
Mr. King joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II in the South Pacific. He worked for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway from 1951 until he retired in 1987. Mr. King was a member of First Baptist Church since 1951. He moved to Lawrence in 1955 with his wife.
He married Marjorie Hilfinger on Jan. 23, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Janet Probeck, Lawrence, and Diane Longfellow and husband Jay, Wichita; a sister, Vernadine Phillips, Seal Beach, Calif.; three granddaughters, Sarah Jergens, Laura Johnson and Melissa Longfellow; and six great-grandchildren, Brenna, Derek, Allison and Billy Johnson, Madison Jergens and Kyra Glover.
Friends may call from noon to 7 p.m. today at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the church, in care of the funeral home.
