John Angus Edwin Bennington

A memorial service for John Bennington, 73, Lawrence, will be at noon Feb. 4 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Lawrence.Mr. Bennington died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at his home after a long illness.He was born Sept. 8, 1935, in England, the son of a Scottish mother, Flora McDonald Henderson, and an English father, Harry Bennington.He graduated from the Glasgow School of Art and became a registered British designer completing design commissions for international companies. He was also an artist, whose paintings may be found in many countries around the world. He designed the club for the American Air Force Base at Prestwick Airport in Scotland. He lived for five years in Zimbabwe, where he owned his own design studio, and then moved to Port Elizabeth, South Africa, where he became the head of the applied design department of the Port Elizabeth Technikon.He moved with his family to California in 1987, lived briefly in Chattanooga, Tenn., then moved to Lawrence to be near his youngest daughter, Kirsty, for health reasons.Because he loved sailing, his family will take his remains back to Scotland, where they will be scattered in the ocean off his favorite island, Gigha, where his mother grew up and his grandfather was born.Survivors include his wife Mary, three daughters, Cara Dooley, Ayr, Scotland, Gail Bunn, Latimer, England, and Kirsty Elliott, Lawrence; and six grandchildren, Scott and Grant Dooley, Francesca and Lorenzo Bunn, and Liam and Doran Elliott.The family suggests memorials to Heart of America Hospice, 1420 Wakarusa Drive, Suite 202, Lawrence, KS 66049.
