Funeral services for Margaret Oros, 95, New Rockford, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd Church in New Rockford. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Sheyenne, N.D.Ms. Oros died Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford.She was born Oct. 5, 1912, at Sheyenne, N.D., the daughter of Olof and Laura Sondrall Erickson. She grew up and attended school in Sheyenne. She received a Bachelor of Arts in geology and a minor in chemistry from University of North Dakota in Grand Forks in 1939. Margaret did graduate work at UND until 1940. She wintered in Apache Junction, Ariz., for 22 years. She moved from Lawrence, Kan., to New Rockford in November of 2003, where she lived at Heritage House and moved to Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in May of 2005.Ms. Oros worked for Bendix Aviation in Hollywood, Calif.; Aluminum Company of America in Vernon, Calif., as a spectrographer during World War II; Harvey Aluminum Company in Torrance, Calif., starting in 1948 as a chemical engineer; the Illinois Geological Survey in Urbana, Ill., as a petroleum geologist and assistant professor; and at the Kansas Geological Survey in Lawrence, where she retired in 1978 as head of the oil and gas division.She was the first woman geologist in North Dakota. She was an associate scientist emeritus at Kansas University and in 1990 was presented the Sioux Award, the UND Alumni Association’s highest honor. She was a member of several geological and petroleum societies and associations. She was an avid ham radio operator and enjoyed traveling the world.Survivors include a sister, Viola Jordre, Oberon; two sisters-in-law, Hilma and Florence Erickson, both of New Rockford; and many nieces and nephews. Ms. Oros was preceded in death by a son, Michael Oros; four brothers, Otto, Leif, Ernest and Clarence; and a sister, Lillian Melin.Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Evans Funeral Home in New Rockford.
