Memorial services for Emma B. Semple Berg, 102, Lawrence, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Lawrence Presbyterian Manor chapel. Mrs. Berg died Thursday, June 7, 2007, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.She was born Jan. 16, 1905, in Topeka, the daughter of William and Rosa Fury Semple. She graduated from Polk Elementary and Topeka High schools. She moved to Lawrence in 1924 and graduated from Kansas University in 1928.Mrs. Berg was a teacher and administrator in Douglas County before she retired in 1962. She also taught and was principal at several rural schools. She served as Douglas County superintendent of public instruction from 1949 to 1959. She was a member of the local, state and national Retired Teachers Association, local and National Association of Retired Federal Employees, KU Alumni Association, Gold Medal Club, Omicron chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, past matron of Order of Eastern Star Adah Chapter No. 7, Friends of Rebekah Lodge No. 754, Douglas County Genealogical Society, Friends of the Lawrence Public Library and Autumn Club.Mrs. Berg had been a licensed operator of the Douglas County Amateur Radio Club since 1942 and a member of the American Radio Relay League and Army Military Affiliated Radio System, and served as editor of its State Bulletin.She served on the board of directors for Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center and Lawrence United Way fund for many years. She was a first lieutenant in the Lawrence squadron of the Civil Air Patrol in the early 1940s. She also served as local adjutant and personnel officer on the patrol’s Kansas wing.She married George Ernst Berg on Sept. 7, 1939, at her home in Lawrence. He died Aug. 4, 1978.Survivors include two nieces, Jane Semple Cox, Phoenix, and Nancy Semple Menchen, Las Vegas.The family suggests memorials to Heart of America Hospice, 1420 Wakarusa, Suite 202, Lawrence 66049.
