Byron S. Brooks

Memorial services for Byron S. Brooks, 88, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Plymouth Congregational Church.Mr. Brooks died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born April 25, 1918, in Baldwin City, the son of Clarence O. and Maude Stewart Brooks.He spent most of his youth in and around Louisburg and Drexel, Mo. He graduated from Louisburg High School in 1936. He attended Ottawa University and graduated from Emporia State Teachers College in 1942. He received a degree in mechanical engineering from Kansas University in 1950. Mr. Brooks served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He was stationed on the USS West Point and transported troops across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans during World War II. He worked for Farmland Industries in Lawrence, and had also worked for Phillips Petroleum Co. and Northern Natural Gas. He retired from Farmland in 1983.He was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, where he was a member of numerous choirs and taught Sunday school for many years. He married Julia Nell Allbaugh on May 8, 1943, in Richland. They shared 63 years of marriage. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include three sons, Mark and wife Susie, rural Overbrook, Carl and wife Nancy, Shawnee, and Bruce and wife Shelley, Independence, Kan.; three brothers, Harold, Pharr, Texas, Wayne, San Antonio, and Paul, Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
