Philip W. Harsh

Services for Philip W. Harsh, 90, Topeka, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Topeka. Cremation is planned.Mr. Harsh died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, at his home.He was born April 12, 1916, in Webster Groves, Mo., the son of George and Erle Coussens Harsh. He graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1933 and attended the University of Missouri, where he played polo and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He moved to Topeka in 1955.Mr. Harsh served in the U.S. Army and was commissioned a lieutenant in 1943. He served with the 45th Colored Engineers, working on the Burma Road in India. He worked for Montgomery Ward in Newton and Larned and later for Unitog in Kansas City. He worked at Hallmark Cards from 1948 until he retired in 1981. He managed the Hallmark Crowns SCABA youth baseball team in the 1960s and volunteered with the Explorer Scouts, Let’s Help Inc., the Capper Foundation and KNI. He was named Volunteer of the Month by the Topeka Capital-Journal in August 1983. He was a longtime active member of First Presbyterian Church and Topeka Roundup Club.He married Nancy Carver on May 29, 1948, in Kansas City. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include three sons, Philip, Berryton, George, Topeka, and William, Chicago; a daughter, Bayliss DuBois, Lawrence; and three grandchildren.The family suggests memorials to a charity of the donor’s choice.
