Gladys L. Roberts

Services for Gladys L. Roberts, 93, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 11 at First United Methodist Church.Mrs. Roberts died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.She was born April 12, 1912, in Knob Noster, Mo., the daughter of David Oscar and Stella Ruff Yost. She attended public school in Emporia.She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Emporia State Teachers College and a master’s degree in library science from the University of South Florida. She moved to Topeka in 1959 and Temple Terrace, Fla., in 1968.Mrs. Roberts had a 40-year career as a teacher and school librarian. She taught at Fairyland School in Lyon County and at rural schools in Clay, Cloud and Washington counties. She also taught in the Topeka public school system and retired as an elementary school librarian in Tampa, Fla.She was a lifelong member of United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years.She also was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and Phi Delta Kappa professional education fraternity.She married Loren G. “Bob” Roberts on May 31, 1937, in Emporia. He died earlier.A daughter, Lorna, also died earlier.Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia “Kay” Hale, Lawrence, and Elaine Ann Hanson, Overland Park; a sister, Merle Carr, Anthony; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.The family suggests memorials to the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence or the Lawrence Schools Foundation, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
