Berryton – Services for Richard Duane Mills, 52, Seal Beach, Calif., will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Berryton United Methodist Church followed by a luncheon at the church. Inurnment will be at a later date.Mr. Mills died Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, in Long Beach, Calif.He was born April 30, 1953, in Topeka, the son of Richard A. and Carol L. Gustafson Mills. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1971. He attended Letourneau Technical College in Texas and Washburn University in Topeka. He graduated from Long Beach State University with a degree in psychology and completed work toward his Master of Special Education at National University in Costa Mesa, Calif. Mr. Mills served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He enlisted in 1973 and was in charge of military security for the Concord Naval Base in Concord, Calif. He was a sergeant at discharge. He worked as an ombudsman and a correctional counselor in Kansas. He later was assistant director for a family planning clinic in Los Angeles and managed foster care homes. He was a special education teacher in Long Beach and a teaching consultant for behavioral management in the Long Beach Public School system. He was a corrections/developer and business advisor and a published author.Survivors include his mother, Carol L. Mills, Lawrence, Kan.; his father and stepmother, Richard and Susan Mills, Berryton; two brothers, Matthew and Justin, both of Berryton; and a sister, Vicky Mitchell, Topeka.The family will receive friends for coffee from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church before the services.The family suggests memorials to Franklin Middle School in Long Beach, sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka 66603.
