Gladys Edna Moss

Graveside services for Gladys Edna Moss, 96, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Des Moines Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.Mrs. Moss died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.She was born Jan. 19, 1910, in Albia, Iowa, the daughter of Robert A. and Elizabeth Ann Turner Tyrrel. She graduated from Albia High School in 1926. She moved to Des Moines in 1929 before she moved to Lawrence in 1985.Mrs. Moss worked for Disciples of Christ from the late 1940s until she retired in 1973 after serving as interim executive director of the Des Moines Area Council of Churches. She held various staff positions, including church secretary and director of religious education, primarily at Highland Park, Park Avenue and College Avenue Christian churches in Des Moines. She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence and Plymouth Women, and organized the Morning Glories. She was also a member of the Ladies Literary League.She married Joseph E. Moss on Sept. 7, 1929, in Albia. He died July 28, 1981.Mrs. Moss was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Donald Tyrrel, and a sister, Ruth Coop.Survivors include two sons, Duane Moss and wife Shirley, Weslaco, Texas, and Donald Moss and wife Madelyn, Lawrence; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
