Clara Hughes Jones

Services for Clara Hughes Jones, 97, Lawrence, will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.Mrs. Jones died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.She was born Oct. 12, 1908, near Reading, the daughter of John William and Annie Maude Chapman Hughes. She graduated from Quenemo High School in 1925 and attended Kansas University. She was a longtime Lawrence resident.Mrs. Jones was a teacher in Vinland and worked at the old Lawrence Public Library, in the office of the Douglas County Superintendent of Schools and retired as a clerk in the Douglas County Treasurer’s Office in 1973. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Lawrence Color Camera Club, Mother’s Discussion Club, Friends of the Lawrence Public Library and Quivira Club. She was active in the PTA and scouting. She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church.She married Herbert L. Jones on May 16, 1928, in Lawrence. He died Nov. 2, 1984.A son, Dennis Neil Jones, a daughter, Phyllis Anne Jones Johnson, and an infant daughter also died earlier.Survivors include a son, Alan Jones, Pioneer, Calif.; two daughters, Marian Abegg and Susan McClintic, both of Lawrence; a sister, Rachel Hall, Pinole, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.The family suggests memorials to the Friends of the Lawrence Public Library or a
