Social media blurs holiday weekend shopping divide

First there was Black Friday. In the last decade and a bit, there’s been Cyber Monday. But now, with social media and specifically location-based services making it so very easy to get news about real-world sales out to your friends with breakneck speed, it seems like the two biggest shopping days of the season have blurred into one long Webphone Weekend.

The About Foursquare blog published a list of all the national Foursquare check-in specials they could find, with local media outlets around the country following suit. And even without an official shoppers’ guide to location-based deals, the word was getting out, of course, via Twitter and Facebook. Yelp even got into the deals game earlier this week – just in time for the holiday weekend, you might add if you’re cynical – with a twist: users who unlock check-in specials can “save them for later” within Yelp, transforming the on-site offer into a coupon that they can redeem at any time.

So with the chance to grab immediate, localized offers – as well as friends’ advice on where to find them – over the holiday weekend, will the face of Black Friday (or Webphone Weekend) advertising change? Twitter’s recent boom posed a similar question as to whether crowdsourced referrals would render traditional advertising obsolete, but as of now, no one’s holding their breath for that prophecy. That said, no one can deny that the transparency presented by tools like Twitter has required businesses to speak honestly and directly to customers in language they can relate to – anything from BP’s post-spill social media fiasco on down to the micro-local level. If anything, businesses need to become more active and personalized in their advertising instead of leaning on the blanket approaches of old – because after all, on Webphone Weekend, it’s simple to hit “ignore” if a deal isn’t really a deal or a message just doesn’t hit home.

Did you use social media to help you score some Black Friday deals? If so, what worked for you and what did you ignore? Did having the Web in the palm of your hand make the shopping day a little simpler? Give us a shout in the comments. And enjoy wrapping those gifts you got!
