Social media team welcomes new member

You might be wondering: Why is this random guy dropping in to write a post on the social media team’s blog? Is he a big deal? Possibly a social media expert? Should I even care?

To answer the second question, my 6-pound ball of fur Reilly tends to think I am a big deal, but he could very well be the only one. To answer the third question, I will just leave it at a modest “not yet.”

My name is Kris McDonald, and I am the social media intern the kind folks at The World Co. chose to hire a few months back.

I graduated from Baker University in 2008 with a dual degree in print and broadcast journalism. Then like many people who graduate in these less-than-prosperous economic times, I freaked out — but only for a few minutes… I mean hours… or actually a few weeks. But I soon calmed down when I got my grad school acceptance letter from Kansas University, giving me a few more years to figure out this question: What do I really want to be when I grow up?

Thankfully, my answer to this question is becoming slightly less foggy as my time at KU comes to a close. Unless something catastrophic happens, I will graduate in May from KU with a master of arts degree in journalism. After this, my final graduation, I will truly venture out in the world as a full-blown adult.

I was introduced to the wonderful world of social media long ago, but didn’t truly understand its benefits until I was reintroduced to it at KU. Like most people I thought it was incredibly stupid at first, but soon changed my mind. Social media can and will change the way the world works. Don’t believe me? Get back to me in about five years and let me know if you still disagree. However, in the meantime, I will continue to embrace this new platform and will try to help you embrace as well.

So what exactly have I been doing? Getting coffee, running errands, etc.? Well, actually, no. I have been tossed into the mix and have been told I will be involved in quite a bit of “real” stuff. Thank God!

Monday was my first day as an official member of the team. As most first days are, mine was a Gumby-like experience as I was pulled in various directions while Ben, Whitney and every one in between tried to quickly fill my head with the necessary details of the job.

I met a plethora of people including but definitely not limited to: Kristin, Chris, Allison, Michelle, Jenny, Tiffany, Ben, Christina, Tom, David, Christian, Maria and… that’s where I kind of go blank. So please consider this my apology to those people whose name I am guaranteed to forget next time I see you.

Before I go, I want to answer the last question: Should you even care? You might not now and may not any time soon, but before my clock hits triple zero and the buzzer sounds, I truly hope to make you care.
