The one millionth comment countdown: So you want to know about prizes?

Comments are coming in at breakneck speed, especially since we put counters on our sites Monday.

In fact, look at the graph below, which shows total comments per day since Sept. 1. You can see just how many more comments we've been getting since the start of our Millionth Comment Countdown on Sept. 16.

Picture_1.png

Picture_1.png

All that leads me to believe everyone is in a hurry to get those "possibly fabulous prizes" just as quickly as possible. Well, the time has come for me to make plain what we'll be offering our user who correctly predicts when the 1,000,000th comment is posted.

Drumroll, please.

From LJWorld.com: A megaphone, so you have a little bit of help in getting your message across
From KUsports.com: Two tickets to the Nov. 14 KU-NU game.
From lawrence.com: Two concert tickets to a local concert that fits you. (Ben Folds has been mentioned as possible...)
From The World Company in general: Dinner with members of the staffs in Lawrence. A tour of the News Center. Various mugs, pens, T-shirts and other World Company schwag. If the winner isn't in the Topeka-Lawrence-Kansas City area, we may substitute the local dinner for a gift certificate.

That's it for now. We'd also like to give some public recognition to both the person who wins the contest as well as the individual who posts comment 1,000,000.

As of noon on Tuesday, we're just a few comments away from punching through 997,000. It won't be long now.

The last thing he said to me, "Doc," he said, "some time when the crew is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to get out there and give it all they got and win just one for the Zipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Doc," he said, "but I won't smell too good, that's for sure."

honeychild (Mel Briscoe) says… "sigmund… you're full of it, brotha man."

OK, there are no trophies for participation. So besides the one winner all the rest are losers. BTW you have confused me with a relative, I am not your "brotha."

I think a dinner with the owners of the Journal World company and reporters would be awesome !

0

So has 1Million been submitted yet?

0

blindrabbit 4 years, 6 months ago

To speed things up; the LJW should run some more stories about KU inter-sport fighting; and anything else that will give some of the right-wingers, or religious nuts a chance to blame Obama... Tom, Bozo, Pilgrim, Right-winger and many others will gladly respond.

0

remember_username 4 years, 6 months ago

Okay everybody - somewhere around post 999,950 everybody just stop posting for a while. You can just see Jonathan Kealing sitting in front of his computer watching the post count tic off and then...nothing. Watching...watching...still nothing.

Somehow that just seems funny to me.

0

Multidisciplinary 4 years, 6 months ago

count up..oh sig! That's the kind of laugh that hurts all kinds of face muscles. I may look younger after this. Thanks.

0

Sigmund 4 years, 6 months ago

lristh1230 (Anonymous) says… "So who is the winner???????????"

We're all winners, everyone gets a trophy just for participation! Still I understand your confusion as the headline reads, "The one millionth comment countdown: So you want to know about prizes?" even though the count is obviously going up (998,991, 998,992, 998,993...) and not down (10, 9, 8, 7...). The LJW has never awarded prizes based upon accuracy of their reporting.

0

SpiritTat 4 years, 6 months ago

That should have said "booSt" readership... :)

0

Yay for prizes ~ and what a clever plan to boot readership: way to go and all in good fun.

Multi, that 10pm post was a winner! LMAO, and the artwork was the robotman! he was in front of a vacant storefront downtown, by a freshly increased parking meter.

well, now I'm just hoping for mass disqualifications due to unsportsmanlike conduct. you see, my official guess passed slightly more than 26 hours ago...thought there's be more of a rush at the close of the contest... d---d humans, who can predict 'em.

Jonathan, the megaphone is hilarious! great concept.
Dinner with members of the staffs in Lawrence.

---okay, is this a McDinner, or at Paisano's? or, maybe its a brownbag at the ljworld compound?

anyway, thanks for making this a contest, great concept.

0

jaywalker 4 years, 6 months ago

Looks like a Wednesday winner......

0

angel4dennis 4 years, 6 months ago

I love contests and think the prizes are just great. It would be neat to have dinner with the staff. I comment on here but have never met any of the staff. I am still in the running!

0

Multidisciplinary 4 years, 6 months ago

OldEnuf2BYurDad

put one on this thread just for fun! These are the people who mentioned their guesses out in the open. I gathered them all up and put them on a blog to keep track.

http://www2.ljworld.com/weblogs/multidisciplinary/2009/sep/21/users-posted-guesses-how-did-they-do/

0

Multidisciplinary 4 years, 6 months ago

Aw, we have a convenient yellow house thread to up the comment count I see.

If we want to get back on track, it's going to take Ronda to blog about the time she belly danced naked AND...

A major fire downtown (that could have been minor had mandatory sprinklers been in place) caused by a homeless man (early 20's) starting a fire using dumpster trash on a roof to warm up during this cold snap, who then died when jumping from said roof.

The jump wouldn't had killed him, but he was impaled on a piece of artwork.

That alone wouldn't have done it either, but the artwork was not sufficiently anchored to support such an impact, so it fell to the side, where he hit it head on a dog tied to a bench by it's out-of-town owner on a leash while she went into shop, killing both he and the dog, as the dog, while friendly and well mannered, had a slick coat and was boney offering little shock absorption.

The woman gets tickets for unlawful animal restraint, illegal parking, (having left one tire over the line), and since the animal last actions were to bite at the artwork, criminal damages to city property.

Several candlelight vigils will be held:

Friends of the Humane Society, in honor of the dog.

People against Restraints.(non species specific)

Friend for the Arts: the work forever destroyed, but always remembered.

Friends of the Homeless : heck, they'll be at the park anyway, somebody just bring candles. Beer and blankets if you've got 'em.

JK..are you anticipating a rush of people trying to make that millionth comment now that the ticker is up?

Got those fire extinguishers ready and evac plans posted in every room?

And if you DO have a mysterious fire or have a bomb threat or something around that time, be sure you've got a list of the disappeareded's in safe keeping at another location will ya?

0

unelectable 4 years, 6 months ago

J.K. writes "From The World Company in general: Dinner with members of the staffs in Lawrence. A tour of the News Center. Various mugs, pens, T-shirts and other World Company schwag."

Correct me if i'm wrong (i'm sure someone on here will) but aren't items with company logos giving out to increase awareness of the company referred to as "swag" not "schwag?"

Last i checked schwag was something you got in a baggie.

<--------- My second post

When did this become a contest?

0

Satirical 4 years, 6 months ago

Sign me up Multi

My anonymity comes with a price, and that price is free food from FreeState.

0

Multidisciplinary 4 years, 6 months ago

Say..around around 8 pm thursday, like those tweet parties..just run it around the clock somewhere, everyone can drop whenever they want to..have laptops around so every can still comment..and drink all day and night until it happens..eat wings and a nachos..people come by during lunch, breaks, not go home to the family after work..

why the hell didn't we think of this? We are SO not NYers..this should have had sponsors..FreeState, all the advertisers..the 1,000,000 comment bash.

0

Multidisciplinary 4 years, 6 months ago

We should have a countdown party!

I have no idea why mel's vomiting made me think of that.

0

Mel Briscoe 4 years, 6 months ago

i've always liked that song. :)

i missed the boat... maybe i'll happen upon some KU football tickets someway somehow anyway. sigh pitiful puppydog look big alligator tears rolling down my face sobbing uncontrollably so distraught i'm vomiting

0

Multidisciplinary 4 years, 6 months ago

Mel, if I recall, the cut off was last friday morning at 10 am. Entries were not just comments on the thread, but people actually needed to go to a certain page and fill out information.

For fun, some made guess on the threads. If you want to do that, go right ahead, although we're getting kind of close so you'd have more of an advantage than those that did so before. However there is still no way to know for sure.

The dip it took sure made a change in what had been happening.

Unless Ronda puts up another great song game..the 1,000,000 could be longer than my official guess, but closer to my original idea that is on my "comments guess".

That's what's going on Nothings right I'm torn

I'm all out of faith This is how I feel I'm cold and I am shamed Lying naked on the floor Illusion never changed Into something real ...

0

coldplay 4 years, 6 months ago

Are comments that have been deleted in the past counted?

0

Tom Shewmon 4 years, 6 months ago

I think you had to do it by last Friday at 5:00 (??) Mel.

0

Tom Shewmon 4 years, 6 months ago

Can I change my prediction? I used my highly refined mathematical skills, then I notice the chart above shot holes through that! Looks like we'll hit a million sometime late Thursday/Friday. I went for Sunday at 11:45:30. Everyone stop posting. Repeat, everyone stop posting until further notice! (Just kidding of course).

0

Mel Briscoe 4 years, 6 months ago

i doubt i'll be the 1 millionth poster but i would really like those tickets. big cheesy grin

0

Mel Briscoe 4 years, 6 months ago

okay, so my guess is this thursday at 3:58 pm. is that the way i'm supposed to do it?

0

4 years, 6 months ago

Jonathan says "the winner of the prizes is the person who guesses when comment 1,000,000 is posted. We will, however, give some recognition to the person who posts comment 1,000,000"

Can I get $5 if they are the same person? :)

0

Jonathan Kealing 4 years, 6 months ago

Mel--

If you'll read back to previous blog entries, you'll see that the winner of the prizes is the person who guesses when comment 1,000,000 is posted. We will, however, give some recognition to the person who posts comment 1,000,000.

Jonathan Kealing Online editor

0

autie 4 years, 6 months ago

only 1300 post yesterday? The frequency will increase exponentially until the extinction burst at the end. After the aww shucks I wasn't even close sets in..and the who made the big post answer. then it will be back to business as usual. When can when we guess when the 2 million post will be made? Cause I'm about a day off on this one. I'd move my guess to sometime Friday morning.

0

mom_of_three 4 years, 6 months ago

Cool prices. I use my ljworld mug all the time.
The won I won about the great saying.

0

Mel Briscoe 4 years, 6 months ago

i would love the football tickets-- my son would go ape sh*t if i told him we were going to that game!

0

Mel Briscoe 4 years, 6 months ago

i honestly don't understand the contest... so whoever GUESSES when the last post will happen and/or who will make the last post wins??

0

bankboy119 4 years, 6 months ago

If I win I may have to make a new ID then haha. Good point Stebbins.

But if Marion wins he won't have to.

0

Multidisciplinary 4 years, 6 months ago

Would they shoot the cannon for that?

0

Multidisciplinary 4 years, 6 months ago

And what photographer isn't going to take photos at the dinner!

Isn't there a big screen at the game? Makes you wonder....

and the winner is...

That guy..there..

0

Stebbins 4 years, 6 months ago

This is great. We're commenting on a story about commenting. And the winner may have to sacrifice anonymity to claim the prize. Ha.

0

d_prowess 4 years, 6 months ago

I love the dinner with various staff! It's like you guys get a prize too by having a free dinner.

Me? No, seriously, you can't really be asking me....Well, now that you mention it I don't have plans for 'that' evening.......let me check my schedule with tange........

0
