A busy early morning in Lawrence
Lawrence and KU Police both had a busy night on their hands tonight. I started listening just after 9 p.m. At that time is was the normal for Lawrence, early on a Friday night. That changed drastically after midnight.
Just before 12:45 this morning Lawrence Police received a call of a disturbance in the 2900 Block of Missouri Street. The call started like most disturbances, as a report of a male and a female in the street yelling at each other. Seconds after Officers went responding to the call, dispatchers received a call from another party that said the male involved in the disturbance had gone into a residence, retrieved a shotgun and proceeded to point it in the direction of several bystanders. Dispatchers updated responding Officers of the situation and ended up with seven patrol units responding on the call. The man went back into the residence prior to Police arriving. Police attempted to make phone contact with the man and he did not answer the phone. No injuries were reported and no arrests were made as Police are still waiting to interview the man about the incident. As of this morning just before 6:30 a.m. at least 3 Officers are back at the address trying to contact the male subject involved. Armed Disturbance LJWorld Story for Updates
Just as the clock hit 1 a.m. Police received a report of at least 20 subjects at 13th Street and Tennessee Street that were throwing beer bottles. Officers arrived and the crowd disbursed.
KU Police were busy as well. 1:15 a.m. they received a report that two females, both dressed in black clothing had knocked over the Jayhawk in front of the Kansas Union. While interviewing the calling party a second KU Officer spotted two females matching the descriptions given by the caller. That officer made contact and after a little questioning they stated that one of them climbed onto the Jayhawk for a picture and it suddenly fell over. We aren't done with this one yet. While Officers were talking to these females, dispatchers received a call about three male subjects that were carrying the Jayhawk away. Those men left in different directions prior to Police arriving, leaving the Jayhawk not far from the Union. Officers recovered the Jayhawk and transported him to the Public Safety office. There were the usual DUI arrests, noise complaints and disturbances. Lawrence Police also received a report of a male on 23rd Street waiving inappropriate hand gestures at passing motorists, he had left the area prior to Police arriving. Along with someone that called LPD saying there were 5 subjects walking on top of vehicles through the parking lot in the 900 Block of Vermont Street. Again, Officers responded and no one was found in the area.
KU Police also apprehended 4 subjects that were seen walking on the field at Memorial Stadium just before 3 a.m.
Things were fairly quiet again after 3:30 a.m. Still had a few noise complaints and a few more DUI arrests.
