Winter storm coming into a bit more clarity

Well, just to add some background to the weather forecast you see posted on the weather page, the big storm system is very impressive in its size and amount of precipitation it will bring to all areas of the storm.

We’ll be on the warm side of the storm all day Wednesday with periods of rain, some heavy. During this time the surface low pressure area will be forming and gaining strength over Oklahoma. The first wave of precipitation will lift east and northeast and leave us waiting the second round of this storm system.

By midday to afternoon on Thursday the second round moves our way from the south. By this point, the low pressure is centered over Central Missouri. This will give us a strong northwest wind and ushering in much colder air. The majority of the precipitation with the second main round will be snow.

Models have been flip-flopping back and forth where the heaviest band will move through. Some suggest a path through areas around Salina, Manhattan and Concordia. However, more recently the consensus has been for areas farther east: Topeka, Burlington, Lawrence and Kansas City to pick up the heavier snows. Regardless, we should all see snow, but the heaviest band could have upwards of 8″ associated with it. At the time of this writing, it’s still nearly 48 hours away and a lot can still change as the storm is really just forming. Nonetheless, travel looks to really turn downhill by late Christmas Eve.

Stay safe and have a Merry Christmas.
