Jenkins files for 2nd district seat
!State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins, a Republican, on Tuesday announced she has filed paperwork necessary to run for the 2nd congressional district seat.”I have traveled the 2nd district and listened carefully to what folks have on their minds, and continue to receive strong encouragement to run for Congress,” said Jenkins, of Topeka.The position is currently held by U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda, a Democrat from Topeka.National and state Republicans have targeted the race after Boyda defeated five-term GOP incumbent Jim Ryun of Lawrence in November.Jenkins was re-elected to a second term as treasurer last year. Before that she served in the Kansas House and Senate.Ryun also has said he will be a candidate in the 2008 race. State Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt, R-Independence, and state Rep. Lee Tafanelli, R-Ozawkie, have also expressed interest in running.The district includes west Lawrence, Topeka, Manhattan and much of southeast Kansas.
