Weapons brandished in separate disturbances in Lawrence

Suspects allegedly brandished weapons in a couple of disturbances reported Monday in Lawrence.

In one case, a suspect and victim were arguing about 7:45 p.m. in the parking lot of Hobby Lobby, at 3311 Iowa St., when the suspect threatened the victim with a “blunt object,” according to Officer Derek Smith of the Lawrence Police Department. Smith declined to confirm exactly what type of object it was, but he said the suspect was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault.

The suspect is a 25-year-old Topeka man, according to corresponding jail records. Smith said the people fighting weren’t thought to be connected to Hobby Lobby.

Earlier Monday, a suspect physically battered a victim and also “brandished a bladed weapon” during an altercation about 2:45 p.m. in the area of Seventh and Kentucky streets, Smith said. The suspect was arrested on a warrant and on suspicion of battery and aggravated assault, Smith said.

Jail logs list the arrestee as a 24-year-old man with a Lawrence P.O. box for an address.
