Moore takes down meet record in Free State’s 3rd-place league finish, LHS places 8th

Free State sophomore Reilley Moore races down the lane in his heat of the 100 yard butterfly at the Sunflower League Meet on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, at Summit Trail Middle School in Olathe.

OLATHE — Seven lengths passed in the final leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay, and Reilley Moore was in the middle of his second lap, slightly behind Shawnee Mission East’s PJ Spencer.

Four minutes earlier, the Firebirds found out over the loudspeaker that they were probably not going to win the meet. They were in third, Olathe South was in second, Shawnee Mission East was in first. Victory is what the Firebirds came for, but at that point, they had a different goal.

Moore kicked his way into first on the last leg of the race to seal the Firebirds’ sixth win on the day in the 11 events they qualified for.

“This is kind of round two,” Free State senior Chad Anderson said. “In the Olathe invite, we lost to a Blue Valley school, barely, and that kind of made Reilley mad. He kept training, and now we’re on the other end of that.”

Free State finished third out of 12 teams with 324 points in the Sunflower League Meet on Saturday at Summit Trail Middle School. Lawrence High, meanwhile, placed eighth with 116 points.

Kicking off the meet as part of a winning team in the 200-yard medley, Moore won the 200-yard intermediate medley during the next event with a time of 1:45.48. Two events later, Moore broke the meet record in the 100-yard fly.

Free State senior Chad Anderson races in the 200-yard freestyle at the Sunflower League meet on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, at Summit Trail Middle School in Olathe.

The record actually belonged to Free State alumn Jordan Portela before Saturday.

“(Reilley’s) times were pretty amazing. He trains well, and he was ready for the competition,” Free State coach Annette McDonald said.

Sprinter Jake Viscomi placed in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly. Riley Sirimongkhon-Dyck won his heat in the 200-yard IM, placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke and paced the three relay teams. Benjamin Vorthmann won both of his events in his first year at the meet as a freshman, and anchored the two winning relay races.

Senior Trenton Hartman led the team in morale and placed 19th in the 100-yard freestyle, and Finn VanDyke raced a state qualifying time in an event.

Anderson knew ahead of his spotlight event, the 500-yard freestyle, that there would be some friendly competition. Lawrence sophomore Tyler Jones was seeded right next to him in lanes three and four, the fastest pairing. Ben Stoeck, of Olathe South, would finish ahead of both, however, with a time of 4:59.10 in the outside lane.

“(Tyler) was right with me the whole time, and it was a great race,” Anderson said. “We swam on Ad Astra aquatics together.”

Jones led the Lions with their highest finish of the day in the 500-yard freestyle at third, also winning his heat of the 200-yard freestyle to claim ninth place overall.

The Lions started off the meet with points on the board before Free State even entered the natatorium, however. LHS had two divers post solid series to place in the top-15 of the league. Sophomore Salvador Good finished with a series score of 275.95 to place 11th, and freshman Keyan Crawford had a series score of 248.05.

LHS senior Alexander Arnone cheers on sophomore Rafael Machado as he competes in the 500 yard freestyle event during the Sunflower League meet on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, at Summit Trail Middle School in Olathe.

“It’s great experience, there’s a lot of really good divers. It’s good to watch and learn from them, as well,” Good said. “I feel like me and Keyan did pretty well. There’s a couple of dives I know we can improve and do better.”

LHS saw the podium in each of the team’s relay races. The 400-yard freestyle team of Jones, Giovani Lule-Paredes, Luke Dunlap and Braden Augustine raced for a time of 3:33.07 to finish ahead of three teams. The 200-yard medley consisting of Augustine, Logan Grose, Alexander Arnone and Dunlap, and the 200-yard freestyle relay with Dunlap, Arnone, Andrew Severn and Augustine, each finished eighth.

“Trenton Snyder did really well in the 200 freestyle, and Braden Augustine did really good today,” Jones said. “(Hearing teammates cheer me on) helps and encourages me to swim faster.”

Jones has qualified for state in four events so far this season, and is excited for the 500-yard freestyle in particular.

Free State will host the “Last Chance Meet” on Wednesday to give athletes their last shot at posting a state qualifying time. LHS is also on deck to compete in the 12-team meet.
