Nicotiana tabacum, no doubt.
Although the percentage of people that use it in the United States is declining, it is still a whopping 20%.
It is one of the most addictive drugs in the world, many claim that it is more addictive than heroin.
And, it is what is referred to as a "gateway drug", but ALL of the drugs it is a "gateway" to are less harmful!
The terrible health effects of using it are well known, but people use it anyway. The deaths and injuries that it causes are in the tens millions, and the national cost the users incur is in the billions of dollars every year.
And yet, there is very little effort to eradicate it!

It is coffee.
Have you ever been at a place of work when a coffee machine isn't working? You'll find people who will literally walk off work. Many insist that coffee should be a perk provided by the employer. Do you ever find employees demanding that their employer provide tea's, hot chocolate, juice, pop?
Some are so addicted that they cannot even be sociable until they get their fix. People from all over the political spectrum, from many different religions and cultural backgrounds are obsessed with coffee.

I, too, was going to comment about something that's apparently added to the water supply (but only in the Lawrence area). You beat me to it.
Seriously, take out the word "illegal" and tobacco and alcohol rule by the sheer number of people affected. Take it from someone who had two alcoholic grandfathers, one who smoked and eventually died of esophageal cancer.

The only benefit of todays commercial tobacco is the revenue the govt receives from the sale of legal smokes The user doesn’t get high and only feels somewhat of A calming effect ,if any. Not much benefit For the cost involved . Most parents today Accept the idea marijuana should be legalized and causes little if any harm. However they Forget the same nice guy that sells them Their daily joints, also probably peddles crack or meth to their kids. An illegal drug dealer is still an illegal drug dealer, unless you believe an illegal immigrant from mexico is ok, but an illegal foreign terrorist immigrant is not so good , Sorry, but Illegal , is still illegal
kylechandler 1 year, 2 months ago
Doesnt get high but feels a calming effect huh? You just described what a post chemo patient feels after they ingest medical marijuana.
And just so you know, when i used to buy grass in college, as with my other friends, the guy selling it was just some hippie stoner, never did he try to get us to listen to the grateful dead and then segue into 'Its even better on Meth maaaaan' Never, although that would be funny.
So try again, the only thing you have to fear is the facts ma'am.
asixbury 1 year, 2 months ago
I'm with kylechandler on this one. Meth and pot dealers are two vastly different breeds. The pot dealer is the friendly stoner next door. Whereas the Meth dealer is the dude missing his teeth with pock marks all over his face, doing whatever it takes to get his meth again. Tweakers are scum, potheads are funny--enough said.

Spend time with a cancer victim on treatment or shut up.
asixbury 1 year, 2 months ago
I'm with Pace. I have seen personally the tremendous positive effects medicinal marijuana has on cancer patients. My mother-in-law could not keep any food down without it. She was in too much pain to ever feel "high." Just like when you take a loritab for pain; if you're truly in pain, it does not make you feel high, just more normal.
jhawkinsf 1 year, 2 months ago
I really have no problem with pot one way or the other. Legalize it or don't, it doesn't matter to me. What I do object to is when it is legalized for medicinal purposes, then used as a ruse for perfectly healthy people to then get their medical marijuana card so they can get high. That's dishonest. And if we encourage dishonesty here, we encourage dishonesty elsewhere. If you want to legalize pot, work towards that end. Do is truthfully. Do it with integrity. But if you do it with lies, then you're no different than those who exaggerate the harm pot does.
asixbury 1 year, 2 months ago
I think it should be completely legal, but the first step to that is making it legal for medicinal reasons. That is easier for the populace to swallow. It's only a matter of time until it's completely legal anyway, but it takes one small step at a time.
Bursting 1 year, 2 months ago
completely agreed, I'm dissapointed people like the one above allow themselves to be brainwashed into thinking its all about "potheads"
jhawkinsf 1 year, 2 months ago
I never met so many "ill" people as I met in California, which has "medical marijuana". All those aging Deadheads with glaucoma, cancer, etc. Their children too. And the grandkids "ill" as well. Thankfully, there are compassionate doctors to treat all of them, they advertise in "High Times" and other magazines.
As I said, I could care less if it's legalized. Just don't cloak it as a medical issue. Those cases, while very real, are but a small percentage of those being served at the dispensaries.
pizzapete 1 year, 2 months ago
I agree people shouldn't be allowed to smoke marijuana just to have fun or to enjoy themselves. Similarly, women shouldn't be allowed contraceptive rights just so they can use sex for fun instead of for pro-creation as it was intended. There better be a life and death situation involved before we allow people that kind of freedom.

i absolutely support any one with any illness that can get relief from marijuana. but i have little respect for the dopers than hide behind the claim for their own pleasure
asixbury 1 year, 2 months ago
I know many, many, many successful people who smoke pot. It no more affects their life then drinking wine with dinner. You would be surprised the true number of users out there; much higher than the reports ever show. It was mainly made illegal to prevent the competition for cotton and tobacco farmers, back during the prohibition. Before that time, no one ever thought twice about it.
patkindle 1 year, 2 months ago
if succesful people are pot heads, they should be proud to pay taxes on thier dope, but that takes the fun out of it for them it should be free with no taxes for cancer patients and such alotof the rich pot smokers kinda like electric cars to cheat the taxes on gasoline to save the planet
asixbury 1 year, 2 months ago
They would be more than happy to pay taxes on it, so their actions are no longer illegal. Most people I know who partake of this plant, this is the only illegal thing they ever do.
I agree 100% cancer patients should get it for free.

Drug laws are doing the most harm. Drugs should be decriminalized. Provided they do not harm anyone else, adults in a free society should be able to ingest whatever substance they want. Making drugs illegal make their impact on society much worse. The "drug war" is an abject failure by any rational measure.
