Why would you need to know of a storm shelter other than your basement?
mdlund0 1 year, 2 months ago
First thought that came to mind was "yea... my neighbor's basement". But, aside from basements and 'safe rooms', what is there? Is there some secret network of underground shelters and tunnels in Lawrence that I should be aware of?
kochmoney 1 year, 2 months ago
That's what I want to know. If it's your basement, that's where you go. If your basement is gone, I'm thinking you have bigger problems.

Some people aren't fortunate enough to have basements...

At the moment no, but my mom had a contractor stop by in the past few weeks to build a 4' x 6' shelter in the garage. It won't be cheap, but it will be put to use as a storm shelter and storage for valuables.

The vault in the bunker. 16 inch concrete walls and roof cap. steel reinforced. Blastproof. EMP protected. Zombie resistant.

I don't have a basement, so I would really like to know if there is a storm shelter near my neighborhood.

I'm guessing it is Holcom Center for me.. but I'm really not sure!

But If I can't take my cat, in a carrier, I'm not going!
mdlund0 1 year, 2 months ago
An F4 tornado hits: if you'd gone to the shelter, the cat dies... you survive to save another cat from the shelter. If you don't go, both you and the cat die. The cat dies either way, except in choosing as you say you would, you get to die too. Your choice seems perfectly logical to me.

I'll jump in the car with my animals and try to out run a tornado before I'd abandon my animals and let them die. I guess how you treat your pets just shows what kind of person you really are. All shelters should allow people to bring their pets.

+1 My animals are family. Their lives are important to me. I would not abandon them either.

Wow! 87% do not know of a shelter in their neighborhood. I'd say there needs to be much more awareness than that!
punkrockmom 1 year, 2 months ago
Well if we don't know where the shelters are, we really need to have a link to that info.
Boomtroculous 1 year, 2 months ago
I thought this link was about giving that info up!

I don't have a basement, and I'm thinking that the last place I want to be when there's a tornado in the area is outside running down the street towards wherever the nearest tornado shelter is.
larrytowngirl 1 year, 2 months ago
LJW>. please give us a list of where the storm shelters are.. It's crazy to ask this ? and then not fill in the BLANK! .. 87% do not know where a close-by shelter is!.. I'd say that just might be some important news!!

larrytowngirl, According to Teri Smith, director of Douglas County Emergency Management, “There are no FEMA-approved public storm shelters in Lawrence”
kernal 1 year, 2 months ago
Since there are no neighborhood storm shelters, why the heck did LJW run a poll insinuating there are?
Jane 1 year, 2 months ago
The answer to your question, I would guess, is to increase the clicks on this website.
