Build it. I might come. It'd be for the jogging track in the winter. I like the idea of youth tourneys & their economic input.
I can't see how this is anything but a good idea that needs doing.

AGREE, AGREE, AGREE! Need a facility on the west side and need an indoor track in town.

Indoor jogging track? Build it, I'll come 4x a week in the winter and (if air conditioned) mid summer.

Beats sitting on your ass all day, though.

At least in terms of exercise.

There's a lot to be said for sitting on your ass.

Nice that the "No" vote has been split three ways to make it seem that there is support for this project.

The "developers" will enjoy a nice profit at our expense, I am sure.

Hey, Scott3460: 53% said yes, so how does adding up all the three types of "no" votes show this as an unfavorable proposal?

jafs 6 years, 8 months ago

Actually, from the way I read it, 49% said yes.

And, if you add up the three no vote categories, you get 48%.

So, it's split about evenly.

I do wonder, of course, about that phantom 3%?

I would use the East one if it wasn't full of thugs, or the downtown one if it wasn't full of homeless people. Not going to move to the west side though.

Maddy Griffin 6 years, 8 months ago

I use both for different reasons and have never known either one to be "full of thugs and homeless people". Me thinks you are the one that is full of something.

d&c, when's the last time you were in either of those rec centers?

bendover61 6 years, 8 months ago

Yes, but it shouldn't be built by the city. Get the YMCA into this town.

George_Braziller 6 years, 8 months ago

Who comes up with these stupid "poll" questions and optional responses? They are always worded so they end up essentially being a "yes" or "no" answer.

It's like asking someone "So, do you still beat your wife?"

jayhawklawrence 6 years, 8 months ago

I am suspicious about the proposed location. Sounds like it was proposed for North of Walmart in order to raise property values in that area.

The perception is not good.

A lot of people in this town already believe Free State has some unfair advantages whether true or not.

This will strengthen that negative perception.

This is one of those polls that will bring out a lot people in the real estate business such as banks, builders, developers, contractors etc etc etc.

On the west side build a $ 7 million rec center or spend $8 million considering Bill Self is taking a tax credit(I assume) by donating $1 million.

On the east side spend $7 million building new wider sidewalks, adding hike/bike trails, curbs etc etc thus providing to east Lawrence what west Lawrence has wayyyyyyy more of.

That 1994 sales tax fund has 17 years of east side contributions which is to say let's keep it fair and balanced.

tomatogrower 6 years, 8 months ago

This isn't a very good poll. I live on the east side of town, and probably would never use it, because it would be further away. How about having equal rec centers on the east and the west.

Out of context, some words just look strange. When I saw the poll question by iteself, I was trying to think of what a "recreation center" would be, since my head was reading it as a "re-creation" center. Was this a religious thing, I wondered? If something has been created, why re-create it? Then I saw one of the answers had the word "gym" and then I understood.

Silly me. Thought I would share.

I work out at home to Insanity and P90X dvd systems. I highly recommend them for anyone looking to get in great shape. Love them and don't see the need to spend money on a recreation center. I re-create at home.

jayhawklawrence 6 years, 8 months ago

I think a recreation center would be a great thing and anything Bill Self is supporting would probably be something I would also support since I like the guy.

That being said, Cromwell has to deal with the fact that a lot of people were not very keen on the fact that we increased property taxes to pay for a library expansion in the middle of a financial crisis with many other problems looming in the city. The library will have to look like a home run when it is built because we will be looking at about 20 years for it to be paid for and a lot of time to criticize the expenses.

The bad thing about economic principles is that even when you ignore them they always find a way to come back and bite you in the butt.

We have to start finding better ways to finance amenities than simply raising taxes. Unfortunately, it is not easy for some people to get that into their thick heads.
