Rocky Road ice cream. Then again, on a day like today I may have to go with hot apple pie.

My grandmothers home made Mac and Cheese.

For my husband it would be a sack of Krystals. http://krystal.com/ For me it would be just about anything with cream gravy (but only if I make it. Well, maybe the way my kids make it since I taught them.)

Mac and cheese, and I don't mean that crap in a box.

Soups...year round. But especially on days/nights like this! Red Lentil with thai red curry paste, Hungarian Mushroom, Poblano Chipotle Corn Chowder, Spicy Sun-dried Tomato Stew, Chipotle 13 Bean Stew, Homemade Cream of Tomato (sometimes with pasta)...just to name a few of current favorites. Yeah...Soup.

Anything biscuit related. Nothing beats a hot, southern-style biscuit when it comes to comfort food.

Mashed potatoes & gravy, homemade bread and anything chocolate!!

Genuine NY/NJ style pizza made in a real oven, not on a conveyor belt. Like Johnny's makes, Johnny's favorite with pepperoni, Italian sausage, extra cheese, mushrooms, onions, green peppers...you get the idea! I can taste it now along with a KU basketball or football game, oh yeah! Rock Chalk on, Melvin!!

Oh, I think it has to be a three-way tie--mac and cheese (homemade of course), mashed potatoes with cream gravy, and/or really good dark chocolate.

Ditto with Autie. Or anything on the smoker. Briscuit...

Ooh, I think it was a typo, but a biscuit made out of brisket. Sweet! That would be delicious! I think you're on to something there.

Home made bread and dark chocolate. I have a hard time leaving home made cookies alone too. Store bought? Not so much.

Mac & Cheese, mashed potatoes and cream gravy, ice cream, dark chocolate

Have to come back and add chicken fried steak! With mashed potatoes and cream gravy, of course.

Pizza. Whether it is Horton's in Pittsburg, Pyramid in Lawrence, or even a Casey's grease rag. It is all good.

Homemade biscuits with butter and homemade jam.

Vodka martinis with jumbo olives, very dry & straight up. Chill the vodka so you don't have to cool it with ice (that just waters it down) and olives.

I don't really have a food weakness or any "comfort food." I eat what I have available when I remember to actually eat. I have weird metabolism.

Home-made soups and stews. Chili topped with shredded cheddar, chicken noodle, beef/barley soup with mushrooms, chicken-corn-potato chowder with dill, NE clam chowder, spicy tortilla soup, and best of all, real NOLA-style gumbo, which takes two days and a fair chunk of change to make.

Here's where I learned how to make gumbo to die for (Thanks, Chuck!): http://gumbopages.com/

Incidentally, he has plenty more great recipes for food and for drinks. And he's funny and interesting and a damn fine photographer. His is one of my favorite comfort websites!

Here, specifically, is Chuck's gumbo recipe index page: http://www.gumbopages.com/food/soups/index.html

I have mixed & matched some of the ingredients from his gumbos to make mine my own; the techniques and tips he offers are the most important thing.

My "Gumbo Pages" gumbo has a velvety thick broth of a complexity that I have never achieved in any other kind of soup. It is absolutely worth the many hours required to do it right and the search for the best available ingredients.

Of course, to top off any kind of comfort meal, some high-quality chocolate is in order. Chewy brownies, high-cocoa-content candy bar (World Market's store-brand bar with sea salt is wonderful and not too pricy), home-made cherry cheesecake with drizzled semi-bitter chocolate, homemade chocolate mousse (served frozen, light as a feather with fresh whipping cream, frothy egg whites, ground almonds, and rich cocoa), Ben & Jerry's NY Super Fudge Chunk ice cream.... it's all good!
