Isn't this a repeat?
This is like groundhogs day.
Why do what's in the best interest of our students when educators prefer an early schedule?
I always preferred an early schedule as a student so I had more time to work after school...that was in high school as well as college.
The students should just go to bed earlier!!!!!!
Exactly! High school is supposed to prepare them for the real world. How is that helping? When they graduate and go to work at a real job, they might have to be there even earlier than they have to be at school.
Because, later, when they are fat losers, like us, in the real world, more sleep would have made them healthier, fat losers. Get with the program.
It doesn't matter how late you start school because kids will just sleep later and stay up later just because they can. Don't make them any lazier than they already are.
When kids are texting and posting on Facebook at all hours of the night, obviously they don't get enough sleep. They need to have their phones and computers off at 10 p.m. or 11 p.m. at the latest, then they can sleep and get up refreshed. See how many Facebook posts are between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m.

Why stop at high school?
How about letting us ALL sleep in; so the business day doesn't start until 11:30AM.
Anyone opposed to that?
Mine dosen't start untill 12:30! :O)
School hours: 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM Eliminates USD 497 from rush hour traffic.
Let's consider other thinking outside the box.
Is there truly any need for students to be doing class per se 5 days a week?
Let's talk 3 days in class and two days to read and do written homework. The two days could be done in the classroom, study hall or at home contingent on a GPA of 3.2 or better.
Yes the the teaching staff would still be at school 5 days a week. No doubt they could find plenty to do. Grading papers, preparing for tests/lab experiments etc etc.
Teaching staff in fact puts in plenty of time after hours perhaps these two days would be helpful. Not only would they be doing themselves some benefit but also be there for students who have questions and/or need assistance with homework. Perhaps would eliminate the Wednesday afternoon off for students.
It would seem that two days available to assist students,if necessary, plus exercise time would be equally as beneficial as "class time".
The school library would be open as well for research work.
All in all could this empower the student, feed comprehension, improve testing, prove to be quite productive in addition to a less stressful environment yet more interesting. Being able to devote whole days to home work and exercise during the school week surely would be beneficial.
Could it save revenue?
Why not promote Tuesday and Thursday as days for study and exercise? Both of which are good for the brain cells?
Nothing prepares students for real life except real life. This suggested new scheduling would be preparing students for the college and/or Vo-Tech routine.
Ever see comedian Richard Jeni do his show bit about his mother trying to wake him up in the morning for school? Hilarious, never thought I'd laugh so hard. But that's what this is about.
My kid went to bed by 10:30-11:00 every school night thru hs because she knew she needed the sleep. Does the same in college. 3.9 grade pt average, job and extracurriculars thru both.
This just seems another excuse for parents to not do their job of raising responsible adults.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ We have a winner!!!
Are performance enhancing drugs in the mix here?
No. At least none that I know of other than coffee!
HOWEVER. I must stand corrected, or informed. Said student supports this move 100%. Says morning classes at LHS were horrible because no one was awake, even with a decent bedtime. Never takes a college class that starts before 10. Only 'b' in college was 8 am econ. I don't know maybe they should change it.
Or try the performance enhancing drugs. What the heck!!
Does it matter what time they go to school, when we have written them off as cost that we can not afford right now?
a point worth considering.
Maybe the first two hours of the day the kids could mow the lawns, clean the floors, help grade tests or be ass't teachers in the grade schools. They could then consider their labors as pay for their education....
School hours need to coincide with Parents work schedules instead of starting later school hours need to start earlier then there would be no need for morning childcare, just afterhours which give students time to get their homework done before Parents get home from work. But then again I think work hours should be cut to 6 hrs to give Parents more quality time with their family and home responsibilities.
bring back recess and intramural sports during school day, give 'em some semi structured time to live a little.
plus the watered down phys ed requirement.
One thing about being old is that one can sleep in as long as they wish. The high school kids now won't live to be old. They are on drugs, sleep deprived and fat and obese even. The grim reaper is waiting for them at the next pep rally.
It would not hurt to mandate exercise periods in the public school system not only for maintaining weight. Exercise wakes up a person and generates energy. What is there to lose?
Let's lobby for a citizen driven healthy mandate.....
Sure let them sleep in longer so that when the parents are already at work they can just stay in bed, now that really makes sense. Leave it up to our stupid school board to think it's a good idea, just another example of why the school district is screwed up.
If they wake up later, they're gonna party up and stay up later. So then even class starting at 1PM will be too early.
