Artwhore,
The question doesn't ask if Life Jackets are or are not necessary, it asks whether or not they should be worn at all times by occupants of a boat. We who choose to not wear them (but have them close by and readily accessible - which IS the law) are not idiots.

Sometimes it isn't safe to go outside. We need a law prohibiting people from going outdoors.

I'd be OK with mandatory jackets for boats under way. For boats at anchor, no.

What would the ruling of a “boat” be? a canoe in 6 inch deep water? No way I'd wear a life jacket in that situation. There are times when I wear one, when i'm in the ocean for instance, but on a crappy fishin' boat, nope.. it's just on board.

I had a big, comfortable sailboat for a long time. I had lots of life jackets on board, but wearing one on a calm, hot day was silly. Stormy conditions, yes. Kids, yes. People who can't swim, yes. Drunks in speedboats, yes. Scratch that. Drunks in speedboats = go to jail.

I don't think people should be required to wear them, but just have them nearby. I think it's the responsibility of the boat owner or driver to make those in the boat to wear life jacket if s/he so chooses.

I don't know. Every time I am a passenger in a boat, i am offered a life jacket by my host, and I always accept it. They don't want to be responsible if I fall over and drown, and I don't want to drown.

If you are required to wear a seat belt in your car why not the life jacket in the boat?

jumpin_catfish: I don't think adults should be required to wear a seat belt in the car either. I do, of course, but it goes back to the paternal laws. I side with radiohawk above.
