Gary Kleypas, 58, was sentenced to death in 1997 for stalking, raping, beating and stabbing to death 20-year-old Carrie Williams, a fellow student at Pittsburg State University who lived two houses down from him, on March 30, 1996. At the time, he was on parole for beating an elderly woman to death in Galena, Mo., in 1977. The Kansas Supreme Court overturned his death sentence in 2001, but a jury again sentenced him to die in 2008. The final briefs for his current appeal have been filed and are being reviewed by the Supreme Court's death penalty staff. When that review is complete, the case will be docketed for oral arguments.

Reginald Carr, 36, was sentenced to death in 2002 for the execution-style killings of Aaron Sander, 29, Brad Heyka, 27, Jason Befort, 26, and Heather Muller, 25, on Dec. 15, 2000. A 25-year-old woman survived being shot in the head and helped identify the killers. Carr and his brother, Jonathan, are said to have broken into the Wichita home where the five were staying, forced them to engage in sexual acts with each other, raped the women, made them withdraw cash from ATMs, and had them kneel in a soccer field before shooting each of them in the head. The Carrs were also convicted of first-degree murder for killing Ann Walenta, 55, in an attempted carjacking in Wichita on Dec. 11, 2000. The Kansas Supreme Court heard oral arguments for his appeal last December. The court's opinion is pending.

John Robinson, 70, was sentenced to death in 2002 for killing Izabel Lewicka, 21, and Suzette Trouten, 28, whose remains were both discovered at his ranch near La Cygne on June, 3, 2000. He was also convicted of the first-degree homicide of Lisa Stasi, 19, who disappeared in 1985 (the death penalty wasn't legal in Kansas at the time of her killing), and pleaded guilty in Missouri to murdering five women between 1984 and 2000. The final appellate briefs have been filed and are being reviewed by the Kansas Supreme Court's death penalty staff. When that review is complete, the case will be docketed for oral arguments.

Sidney Gleason, 35, was sentenced to death in 2006 for killing Miki Martinez, 19, and her boyfriend, Darren Wornkey, 24, in Great Bend on Feb. 21, 2004. Prosecutors said Gleason thought Martinez might tell police about an earlier robbery and stabbing he committed. Gleason's cousin and accomplice, Damian Thompson, escaped the death penalty after agreeing to testify against Gleason. The Kansas Supreme Court heard his appeal in October 2012 but has yet to issue an opinion.

Scott Cheever, 32, was sentenced to death in 2008 for shooting and killing Greenwood County Sheriff Matthew Samuels, 42, on Jan. 19, 2005, as Samuels attempted to serve Cheever with a warrant at a Virgil residence where Cheever was cooking and using methamphetamine. In 2012, the Kansas Supreme Court overturned his conviction because of improper evidentiary procedures. Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the Kansas court's decision and remanded it to the lower court. Attorneys in the case are still filing their appellate briefs.
