Visiting a cigar factory in Esteli, Nicaragua, near the Honduran border, I noticed this man counting cigars. I asked my friend what was different about him: “He’s Cuban,” my friend said. The Cubans are a smart bunch. They sell their tobacco to Nicaragua, and this factory uses it to make 180,000 cigars a month to export, possibly to the U.S.

For 32 years, Lawrence resident Charley Mattingly has been forging steel and shoeing horses as a farrier. Instead of his customers coming to him, he meets them at horse shows and works from his truck, which is fully outfitted with all the necessities for doing his job. In this photo, Mattingly shapes a steel shoe. At right, his forger, which is attached to the truck, heats the shoes for shaping.
Homemade bath crayons are made from melt-and-pour soap combined with gel food coloring poured into ice cube trays. They won’t stain the tub but may temporarily color fingers.

Daisy was rescued from the Jefferson County Humane Society by Kimberly Williams and her family. Daisy is a Red Heeler mix. She is a very smart dog and already fetching the newspaper every morning. Williams submitted the photo.
