Letter to the editor: Meaning of MAGA

To the editor:

Question: What does the phrase “Make America Great Again” mean? It is sufficiently loose that you could just about make up any meaning for it. I suspect that is why Trumpistas like it. I also suspect that many Trump supporters would be surprised by their comrades’ definitions. I suspect they would learn that it means something different to everyone! It is actually meaningless. Does it refer to the time when a would-be colonialist United States was picking a fight with a weak Mexico to take over what became two-thirds of today’s country? Does it mean the time after World War II when people were released from the stringent rationing of the war and could start to spend money and time doing things for themselves? Does it mean the time before “minorities” began to obtain some of the respect and equality that white Americans had for centuries? Does the “meaning” depend more on what you want out of your country than what you want to do for your country?

Can anyone answer this question?
