Letter to the editor: Don’t impeach

To the editor:

More and more people are talking about impeaching President Trump. Assuming he deserves it legally, there is also the political question of whether it should be done. Let me examine his leadership style with two examples.

He said we needed a wall on our southern border and Mexico would pay for it. It’s obviously silly, but his base bought it. Now that he’s governing, he is looking for funding from our government, as he must.

He said we would remove our troops from Syria right away. After lots of people on his staff and in the military said how terrible that would be, he backed down, trying to backpedal with all kinds of qualifiers. This will quietly die.

Trump says all kinds of outrageous and wrong things, but many times backs away from them later.

If he is successfully impeached, we will get Mike Pence as president. Look for a successful assault on women’s rights, bigger tax cuts for the rich, more religious interference in government, cutting Social Security, more pollution and climate changing carbon emissions. He condemns the morals of Bill Clinton but not Donald Trump. Sound like a winner? Not being an overt nut case, he will be much more successful at getting his agenda through.

For this purely political reason, I suggest we put up with Trump, trying to limit the damage until the next presidential election.
