Letter to the editor: Shutdown solution

To the editor:

People who see no way out of the current impasse between Congress and the president over funding of “the wall” are people who see it as an appropriations issue. It is not. It is a political issue. It should be addressed in the same way that all national political issues are addressed these days.

Here’s the obvious solution: Congress passes a continuing resolution that includes no money for a border wall. The president tweets to the world that he got the money for the border wall (better yet, that he got it from Mexico) and any report to the contrary is “fake news.” His base, who believes only him, is happy. The president is happy. Congress is happy. And I’m happy, because the Coast Guard, the Border Patrol, and all the other federal employees who do actual work — and whose holidays were ruined — get paid again.
