Letter to the editor: Use for building
To the editor:
The announcement that the Greenhouse Culture Church was vacating the Masonic Temple caused me to think of a use for that historic and iconic building. The lot was owned by Jabez Watkins and had many and varied uses. In April of 1909 Watkins made a special price of $10,500 to the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Lodge of Perfection. He considered the property sacred ground and favored a Scottish Rite Temple being built on the site. The magnificent Masonic Temple was opened December 12, 1911 at a cost of $40,000. Because of its connection with Watkins, the building would be a good place for the Archives of the Watkins Museum. The buildings would anchor each end of the block. Jabez and Elizabeth Watkins would be pleased.
I would look forward to more dialogue on this subject.
