Letter to the editor: Bush Sr.’s record

To the editor:

Richard L. Warrick wrote a letter concerning George H. W. Bush. His Dec. 5 letter included some misstatements of fact.

1. Bush was worth $25 million at death; he was not a billionaire.

2. Bush voted for and supported the Fair Housing Act, in spite of what Mr. Warrick wrote.

3. Bush opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act; he supported 1968 civil rights legislation; he vetoed a 1990 civil rights act, but supported and signed a 1991 compromise bill. He did not “oppose every single piece of civil right legislation in his era.”

4. Bush opposed the Medicare Act in 1964 – but did not try to destroy Medicare later in his career. I have searched but cannot find where Mr. Warrick came to that conclusion.

To quote Mr. Warrick, let’s remember the whole man, not the nonexistent one. Bush made many political choices, some good and some bad, as have all politicians; let history judge him based on facts.
