Letter to the editor: Value journalism

To the editor:

Three cheers for all the newspapers in the USA! Thank you to the Lawrence Journal-World for the Aug. 16 editorial with their strong affirmation of a free and reliable press in our centuries-old nation!

My sister taught me to read at age 5, using the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. The first things my husband and I ordered for our new home in Iowa were subscriptions to the Waterloo Courier and the Des Moines Register. Twenty-five years later we added the Dubuque Telegraph Herald when we moved there. Retiring to Missouri in 1999 we enjoyed the Springfield News-Leader for 11 years and the Columbia Tribune for 11 years. In 2010 we finally found the perfect location, Lawrence, Kansas, and each morning we leisurely enjoy the Lawrence Journal-World with breakfast!

Those who wish to destroy our democratic republic will begin by attacking the free press! Sorry to say, but we are beginning to notice this happening at the highest levels of government for the first time in my lifetime! You can stop this devastating trend by casting your ballot on Nov. 6 for those who will speak up against the bent toward authoritarianism and denigration of the constitutional protections we all depend upon! I will be voting to send someone to Congress to help uncover and defeat the real “enemies” in our country! Join me!

Audrey Mortensen,

Lawrence
