Arthur Wendell Lamb

Arthur Wendell Lamb, aged 91, died peacefully on October 9, 2015 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence, Kansas. Art was born February 23, 1924, in Carmel, Indiana, the son of Arthur Coleman Lamb and Frances Wineman.
Art had an interesting history. At the University of North Carolina, he lettered in track and was in the ROTC program before becoming a Navy officer in World War II. He was active in civil affairs, and served 8 years as a city councilman and mayor pro tem of Independence, Missouri. He was the first chairman of The Harry S. Truman Award Commission, which permitted him to meet with numerous national dignitaries. He owned several businesses, including Sandwich U in Independence, Missouri and Sanderson’s Lunch in Kansas City, Missouri. Art was also an active member of the University of Kansas Endacott Society in Lawrence.
As a longtime member of Mensa, Art’s passions were politics, literature, architecture, travel and games. He was known to spend many an afternoon playing an intense game of Scrabble.
Art was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie Gamble and first wife Rita Watson, sisters Betts Strong and Ruth Benner. He is survived by four sons, T.J. Lamb of Blue Springs, Missouri, Michael (Maryann) Lamb of Lenexa, Kansas, Richard (Sandy) Lamb of Blue Springs, Missouri, and Jim (Cheryl) Lamb of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; four daughters, Jeannie (Paul) Mitchell of Windsor, Colorado, Meghan (Scott) List of Portland, Oregon, Anne Noe of Bradenton, Florida, and Susie (Billy) Vaughn of San Antonio, Texas; fifteen grandchildren, Christopher and Jason Lamb, Jonathan and Jamie Lamb, Brian Lee, Brigit Mulcahy, Brittany Lee, Hannah and Maxwell Noe, Zachary and Nolan Lamb, Carson and Siena List, Sydney and Alexandra Vaughn; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces Sue Beam and Pam Downey; and nephew Tedwood Strong.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to his caregivers, neighbors and friends for their support over the past few years.
Art requested no services and will be interred in Denver, Colorado near his mother and sister.
